This concert is jointly created by the Conservatory of Music of Shanghai Normal University and Duan Aiai Erhu Art Studio, and is jointly performed by the famous erhu player Duan Aiai and young erhu player Wu Xudong and a number of graduate and undergraduate students of the School of Music of Shanghai Normal University. The concert selected a number of representative works such as folk music, opera music, traditional music and modern music with Jiangnan background and Shanghai school characteristics, and showed the Jiangnan charm and Shanghai school characteristics of erhu art through different forms of interpretation.

Profile

Duan Aiai

Duan Aiai is a National Class One Musician and an erhu soloist with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra. She is also the Executive Council Member of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, President of the Erhu Committee of the Shanghai Musicians’ Association, Professor for Master Degree in Performing Arts (Erhu) by the Shanghai Normal University Music College, Adjunct Professor of Arts of the New York University at Shanghai, Visiting Professor of the Xi’an Conservatory of Music. She was also awarded the honorary title of the “March 8 Red-banner Pacesetter” for her outstanding achievements.

 

Aiai graduated from the Chinese Music Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She was then invited to join the renowned Shanghai Oriental BroadcastingChinese Orchestra and later, Shanghai Chinese Orchestra as its Concertmaster. She performed as a soloist in dozens of countries and regions, such as the China Arts Festival closing, Shanghai Spring Music International Festival opening and closing, Shanghai International Arts Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival opening and World Broadcasting Day Festive Concert among many others. She performed with reputable orchestras such as the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, NationalChinese Orchestra Taiwan, and Macau Chinese Orchestra. She has also held several solo recitals and masterclasses. She was also invited to guest-judge various music competitions. She has recorded and published a large number of personal albums and books, many of which have been selected for the Shanghai Art Creation Talent Fund Project. Aiai’s discography includes solo albums, DVDs, recording tracks in Spotify and apple iTunes store.

 

Wu Xudong

Wu Xudong is a young erhu player, a professional teacher of erhu in the instrumental music department of the Conservatory of Music of Shanghai Normal University, an artistic director of the Youth National Orchestra of Shanghai Normal University, the deputy secretary-general of the Erhu Professional Committee of the Shanghai Musicians Association, and a director of the National Orchestra Society. Graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Professor Wang Yongde, a famous erhu player and educator.

 

The main awards include: the Bronze Award of the Erhu Youth Professional Group of the 2nd "Chinese Cultural Government Award, Wenhua Art Academy Award"; 2008 "Shanghai Spring International Music Festival" Erhu Invitational Competition Third Prize; Silver Award in the Youth Vocational Group of the First "Dunhuang Cup" International Network Erhu Competition; Outstanding Performance Award of the 7th "China Music Golden Bell Award Erhu Competition"; Best Performance Award of the First "National Higher Music Academy Erhu Works Competition"; First Prize of the 3rd Shanghai "College Student Art Exhibition and Performance Activities College Art Education Research Paper"; The 4th "Golden Asparagus National Instrumental Music Performance Competition" String Pulling Professional Group B Outstanding Instructor Award; Outstanding Instructor Award of the 4th “National College Student Art Exhibition and Performance Activities"; The 5th “Dunhuang Cup" China Erhu Performance Competition Outstanding Instructor Award, etc.

 

Zhu Shuqi

Zhu Shuqi, is a young teacher in the School of Music, Film and Television of Changzhou University, and the art instructor of “Dragon Rhyme” National Orchestra of Changzhou University.  She got her B.A. and M.A. of erhu performance in the School of Music of Shanghai Normal University under the apprenticeship of Lecturer Wu Xudong and Professor Duan Aiai respectively.

 

She has rich experience in erhu performance, and has won many awards. On behalf of Hangzhou Art Troupe, she took part in the cultural and art exchange of “Spring in the City” held in Singapore. On behalf of Shanghai Normal University, she gave her performances in the cultural exchange during her visit to Ho Chi Minh Normal University in Vietnam and Botswana University in Africa. She has won “First Prize in Group B” at the 4th National College Student Art Performance Exhibition, “Excellent Award” at the 5th “Golden Reed-pipe Wind Instrument” National Instrumental Competition, “Bronze Award for Youth Group C” in the 2nd China National Chamber Music Ensemble Competition of “Dunhuang Cup”, and “First Prize in Group B” at the 6th National College Student Art Exhibition and Performance. She has been honored with titles such as “Future Star of Professional Youth Group B” at the 1st China National Instrumental Art Exhibition of “National Rhyme Cup”, and “Excellent Instructor” at the 4th National Music Competition of Magnolia International Music Festival.

 

Xie Ruoyao

Xie Ruoyao was admitted to the Music College of Shanghai Normal University as an undergraduate majoring in musicology in 2017, under the guidance of lecturer Wu Xudong. She is now a master student in Music (Major) National Instrumental Music Performance of Shanghai Normal University, Grade 2021, under the guidance of Professor Duan Aiai. At the same time she is a member of the Erhu Professional Committee of Shanghai Musicians Association.

 

Xie Ruoyao has been awarded with Adult Chinese Strings Excellent Award in the 5th Hong Kong International Music Festival 2018 Music Competition,the third prize of the Second 2021"Dunhuang Cup" Chinese National Chamber Music and Ensemble Competition,the first prize of the 6th National College Students Art Performance Art performance Group B , "Future Star"of the first "Guoyun Cup" National Instrumental Music Performance Professional Group Youth Group B ,the first prize of 2022 "White Magnolia " Shanghai International Music Festival,the second prize of professional group 2022 "White Magnolia " Shanghai International Music Festival.During college, she won the "Art Elite" Scholarship of Shanghai Normal University.

 

Zhang Jiaqian

Zhang Jiaqian, graduated with a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Shanghai Normal University, and studied Erhu Music Performance as a graduate student at  Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She studied under Professor Wu Xudong and Professor Wang Yongde, under Associate Professor Qian Jing in Vocal Music, and under Professor Wang Luxin in Piano.

 

Main practices and awards: Formerly served as the deputy head and head of the publicity department of the Youth Ethnic Orchestra of Shanghai Normal University, and was awarded the second group in the art performance category of the 6th National College Student Art Exhibition in 2021; Since 2015, as a member of the first edition of the Shanghai Student Ethnic Orchestra, she has been participating in various performances and have also played solo roles in erhu, jinghu, banhu, and other genres multiple times. What’s more, she won the all-around first prize of Shanghai Music Teacher Basic Skills Competition in 2021, the special gold award of the 13th International Chinese Arts Festival in 2021 and so on.

 

Wan Ziqing

Wan Ziqing,The 2019 undergraduate students of the School of Music of Shanghai Normal University studied under Mr. Wu Xudong, and in 2023, they were admitted to the master's degree in national instrumental music performance at the Conservatory of Music of Shanghai Normal University, under the tutelage of Mr. Duan Aiai. He is currently the director of the Youth National Orchestra of Shanghai Normal University and the principal string orchestra. Participated in the sixth national college student art exhibition and won the first prize.                            

 

He won the "Future Star" of the first "Guoyun Cup" National Instrumental Art Exhibition Professional Group (Erhu) Youth Group B; Bronze Award of Professional Youth Group C of the 5th "Dunhuang Cup" China Erhu Performance Competition; "Magnolia" International Music Festival Chinese Music Competition Professional University Group First Prize; "Magnolia" International Music Festival Chinese Music Competition Professional Ensemble Group Second Prize. In 2022, he participated in the project project of "Jiangnan Erhu Art Inheritance and Research", and successfully participated in the "Water Country String Sound" special concert in 2023.

 

Zhou Mohan

Zhou Mohan, a young erhu instrumentalist, obtained the Master’s Degree of Erhu Performance from Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is the lecturer of erhu in School of Music, Film and Television of Changzhou University, head of teaching and research section of instrument music of Changzhou University, director of Changzhou Musicians’ Association, and president of Folk Music Society of Changzhou Musicians’ Association. He is also the member of the “Heptachord Emotion—National Chamber Music Group of Xinrui of Shanghai Conservatory of Music”. He has been selected as the talent in “Excellent Folk Music Talent Support Program of China Nationalities Orchestra Society” and “Famous Teacher and Apprentice Program (2022-2025) of Jiangsu Literature and Art”.

 

Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu, in 1992, he started learning erhu from his father at the age of six. He was apprenticed to distinguished professors Ou Jingxing and Wang Yongde, and received careful guidance from renowned erhu performers and educators Chen Yaoxing, Zhu Changyao, and Chen Chunyuan.

 

He has been honored with the title “Star of Folk Music” (the highest award) at the 1st China National Instrumental Art Exhibition of “National Rhyme Cup”. He has won “Special Gold Award for Professional Erhu Youth Group” at the 4th International Instrumental Competition of China, “Excellent Award for Folk Music Group” at the 9th competition of China Music Golden Bell Award, “Finalist Award for Erhu” at the 10th competition of China Music Golden Bell Award, and “Silver Award for Erhu Group” in the 2022 Instrumental Competition of Jiangsu Provincial Literature and Art Awards.
