When the misty mountains of Taiwan meet the tropical breeze of the South Seas, the sound of the yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer) brings forth a symphony that transcends borders. “Ripple of Treasure Island, Breeze of Nanyang” is a musical feast jointly presented by the Singapore Yangqin Society and the Taiwan Yangqin Ensemble. Using the yangqin as a cultural bridge, this concert weaves together the elegance of Taiwan and the vibrant spirit of Southeast Asia.
The program features refreshed interpretations of timeless classics — a medley of Taiwanese folk songs paints serene mountain landscapes through the yangqin’s expressive tones, while the Malaysian folk tune "Rasa Sayang" bursts with tropical joy and exuberance. Several new ensemble works will also make their world premiere at this event, including “Melodies of the Vivid Isle,” “Whispers in the Clouds,” and “Aroma of Durian,” blending modern and traditional elements to showcase the musical beauty of the Taiwan Strait and Nanyang.
The concert offers a rich variety of performances: youthful energy shines through the ensemble pieces by the Singapore Yangqin Society’s youth group, while the seasoned musicians of the Taiwan Yangqin Ensemble display masterful artistry. The joint performances between the two groups seamlessly blend diverse musical styles. Here, the yangqin becomes more than just an instrument — it is a messenger of cultural exchange, guiding the audience through a journey of cross-regional harmony and musical enchantment.

Hakka Folk Song Suite | Arranged by Chung Chuan-Po
Combining Taiwan's classic Hakka folk songs: mountain songs, flat songs and ditties are the essence of Hakka music traditions. After migrating to Taiwan, most Hakka people formed settlements in the middle of the mountains and their main job was to grow tea, so they gradually developed famous music such as tea-picking songs. The composer of this song used both flat and minor keys to showcase the unique musical style of the Hakka people.
Rasa Sayang | Arranged by Wei Yanming
"Sayang" means "great love" in Malay. The melody is light - hearted, humorous, and exuberant, expressing the Malay people's love for life and their affectionate and amorous folk customs.
Three Love Songs (Adapted from Teresa Teng's songs | Arranged by Chung Chuan-Po
It is composed of three beautiful songs by Teresa Teng: Sweet Honey, I Only Care About You, and The Moon Represents My Heart, using the gorgeous dotted notes of the dulcimer to string together continuous emotions.
Melodies of the Vivid Isle | Composed by Wu Lizhi, orchestrated by Xie Jianming
“wind and waves overlap, music and dance in sync,
campfires burning, igniting the charm of the tropical island"
This piece paints the colorful scenery of a tropical island and captures the lively rhythm of daily life there. Through the vibrant timbre of the yangqin and the dynamic pulse of percussion, the music leads the audience on a dazzling journey — rich in color, energy, and tropical charm.
Gypsy Flame | Composed by Xiong Junjie
This work is a dulcimer duet with typical Gypsy music style, and the melody is derived from Gypsy folk music. Because of the scattered distribution of the Gypsy people in Europe, Asia and Africa, the melody of this work has many adapted versions, each of which has the characteristics of assimilation with the local culture. The overall musical expression of this song is passionate, depicting a joyful scene of singing and dancing.
Whispers in the Cloud | Composed by Ma Huan
"At the river's end I pause to gaze; As clouds rise, I sit and wonder."
Wang Wei's verses carve a Zen-like realm beyond worldly cares, a haven for the soul amid life's noisy tides.
The melody Whispers in the Clouds takes this as its muse, melding the clouds' fleeting forms and life's ebb and flow into notes.
In the undulating rhythms lie the composer's shifting heart.
To listen is to meet the clouds in a silent tryst, a journey to explore the soul and seek the true meaning woven through existence's tide.

Singapura oh Singapura, pretty flowers bloom for you and me.”
Gentle Rain | Composed by Li Bochan
All things in nature cannot live without the nourishment of rain. The sound of the dulcimer is like nature's moist rain, which gracefully falls from the sky to the earth, penetrating into the soil, nourishing all things and the hearts of every listener.
Tibetan Qing | Composed by Luo Zhenghui
The colors of Tibet are simple and strong. Blue is the basic color of Tibet. This kind of blue is flawless, pure and clear. With it as the background color, the clouds are whiter, the sky is lower, people are smaller and their minds are broader. Under the blue sky, people usually forget themselves. The scenery in their eyes takes away all their thoughts. The mountains and rivers painted by it all sparkle with pure and bright beauty.
Fragrance of Durian | Composed by Wei Yanming
