Join us for a joyful celebration of the dizi — the bamboo flute that has inspired musicians across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore for centuries. This concert shines a light on beautiful works from these regions, blending familiar favourites with exciting Singapore premieres. It’s a chance to hear how the bamboo flute continues to nourish and connect cultures through its warm, expressive sound.
Leading Singaporean masters Prof. Zhan and Mr. Choo, and Dr. Ghanavenothan, will share their passion and artistry. The evening ends with cultural medallion recipient Mr. Watson’s Migration of the Birds — a heartfeltpiece that captures the flight of birds across the skies, symbolising connection, movement, and the celebration of life.

The Hong Kong Dizi Lab
The Hong Kong Dizi Lab originated in 2016 and was officially established in 2024. Composed of local dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) performers and enthusiasts, the group is honored to have four renowned dizi masters—Mr Choo Boon Chong, Yeung Wai-kit, Chan Chi Yuk, and Wu Yun Kan—as artistic advisors and provide professional guidance.
The ensemble promotes innovation and development in Chinese bamboo flute art through research, academic studies, and performance activities. Actively exploring new styles of dizi ensemble performance, the group challenges traditional boundaries and experiments with the fusion of diverse musical elements to create modern and avant-garde works. Notably, the Hong Kong Dizi Lab is the first to systematically apply the Western flute "whistle tone" technique to dizi ensemble performance, expanding the instrument’s timbral range and expressive capabilities.
Beyond performance and composition, the ensemble also focuses on research in performance techniques, pedagogical systems, and literature compilation, aiming to build a solid theoretical foundation for the art of the dizi. Since its founding, the group has been invited to collaborate with various organizations such as the AIA Carnival, the Hong Kong Harmony Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Youth Music Association Chinese Orchestra, and the Guangzhou Children's Palace, showcasing the diverse appeal of dizi music and earning widespread acclaim from audiences.
Shanghai Conservatory of Music Bamboo Flute Chamber Orchestra
Established in 2015, Shanghai Conservatory of Music Flute Fu Bamboo Flute Chamber Orchestra is composed of Professor Zhan Yongming and the students under his guidance. Members have been invited to participate in artistic practice activities of concerts, bamboo flute lectures and professional competitions in the industry for many times, with remarkable and well received results. They are good at playing solo and ensemble works of different styles, and with the support of the concept of "Cultivating Compound Talents Integrating Performance, Teaching And Creation" advocated by Professor Zhan Yongming, for new bamboo flute works. The orchestra adheres to the purpose of carrying forward bamboo flute culture, inherits tradition, pioneers and innovates, cultivates outstanding talents, builds team culture and cooperation spirit.
QingLun Tan, conductor
QingLun Tan is a traditional arts producer, educator, and award-winning musician. As the first Singaporean to earn a Ph.D. in Chinese Music Performance (Dizi) from the China Conservatory of Music, QingLun has commissioned and performed over 20 original works by Singaporean composers, with many of these Dizi repertoires being performed and adapted by musicians worldwide.
Inspired by his passion for the Dizi, QingLun explored its counterparts in various cultures, leading to the creation offestivals that celebrate the diversity of traditional flutes. He founded the Singapore Dizi Festival in 2015, the ASEAN-Korea Flute Festival in 2017, and the Traditional Flute Festival in 2018. These events bring together renowned musicians, cultural practitioners, and local artists to foster greater appreciation and understanding of traditional music.
As an advocate for Singapore's multicultural music heritage, QingLun co-founded yIN Harmony and the Impression of Nanyang Arts Association, ensembles that celebrate and promote music by Singaporean composers, blending diverse cultural instruments and traditions. Through these initiatives, he continues to champion the vibrant diversity of Singapore’s musical landscape.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, QingLun was awarded the Sangitha Kala Nipuna in 2024.
Currently, QingLun serves as the Artistic Director of Reverberance Ltd., a traditional Chinese wind and percussion ensemble, and as a lecturer at Singapore Raffles Music College, where he mentors master’s students. He also holds key roles in the arts community as a Council Member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation, Secretary of the Singapore Dizi Society, and Vice-President of the Impression of Nanyang Arts Association.
QingLun credits his achievements to the mentorship of Dr. Tay Teow Kiat, Prof. Zhan Yong Ming, Dr. Ghanavenothan,Dr. Ng Seng Hong and Dr. Ku Pao-wen, whose guidance has been instrumental in shaping his artistic journey.
With a mission to foster connections through music, QingLun is dedicated to sharing Singapore's multicultural music with the world and inspiring audiences through his artistic endeavors.
Zhan Yongming
A renowned dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) performer and educator, Zhan Yongming currently serves as Professor and Doctoral Advisor in the Department of Chinese Traditional Instruments at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He is also Head of the Wind Instruments Teaching and Research Section, Vice President of the Chinese Musicians Association Dizi Society, Honorary President of the Zhao Songting Dizi Art Research Association, Council Member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation, and President of the Singapore Dizi Society.
Zhan Yongming is one of the most distinguished figures in the contemporary dizi world. Over the decades, he has won numerous awards in both national and international music competitions and has performed and lectured in more than 20 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. He is widely acclaimed as the “Magical Flute” and was hailed by The Washington Post as “an outstanding performer of our time.”
In 1991, he became the first distinguished dizi performer from mainland China to visit Taiwan, making significant contributions to cross-strait exchange in dizi performance and education. This historic visit earned him the reputation of delivering “the first sound of the dizi across the strait.”
In 1988, he was among the first to be recognized as a National First-Class Performer in China. In 1991, he was awarded a Special Government Allowance by the State Council. In 1997, he moved to Singapore to teach at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In 2004, he was appointed Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. His course “Core Curriculum for Chinese Bamboo Flute Studies” was selected in 2013 by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as a Key Project Course and a Flagship Course of the conservatory.
From 2015 to 2017, he served as member of the Ethnic Wind Instruments Team under the Conservatory's “Peaks and Plateaus” initiative. From 2018 to 2020, he was Chief Professor of Ethnic Wind Instruments in the "Double First-Class Discipline Innovation Team."
His achievements have been recorded in The Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Literary and Artistic Figures, The Dictionary of Chinese Musicians, and The Dictionary of World Contemporary Figures.
Lu Yaobo
A contemporary young bamboo flute and xiao performer, music composer, second-level performer, PhD candidate in bamboo flute at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Director of the Project Creation and Research Department of Shaanxi Peking Opera Theater, winner of the First Chinese Folk Music Outstanding Young Talent Award, member of China Nationalities Orchestra Society, director of the Bamboo flute Society of China Musicians Association, Young Art Creation Talent of Shaanxi Province in 2019 and 2024, member of the Expert Database of Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Vice President of the Bamboo flute and Xiao Professional Committee of Shaanxi Musicians Association, Resident Composer of Shandong National Orchestra, Art Director of "Elegance of Chang'an" at the Silk Road International Art Festival, and recipient of “Hundred Projects in a Century” Creation Plan of the National Cultural and Tourism Ministry, National Art Fund, and Shaanxi Provincial Art Creation Funding Projects.
His teacher is the renowned bamboo flute and xiao performer, educator and PhD supervisor Professor Zhan Yongming. He has also received instruction from famous bamboo flute performers including Ma Di and Zhang Yanwu (representatives of the Chang'an bamboo flute school) and Liu Huaiqi, a renowned bamboo flute performer from the Gansu Song and Dance Theater. His original works, including Pictures of Qilian Mountains, Melody on the Loess Plateau, Jinse (Ancient Zither), and Yunshao (Ancient Court Music) have been broadcast on CCTV Music Channel and included in publications and recordings by multiple well-known publishers and record companies. Among them, Dancing Sand was designated as a required piece for the 8th National Youth National Instrument Education and Teaching Achievement Exhibition (Wenhua Award). In 2025, he composed and released the song Asking West Lake for the new art musician Gong Linna.
He has won multiple honors, including the Gold Award at the Hong Kong International Bamboo Flute Invitational Competition, the “Folk Music Star” at the 2nd Guoyun Cup, Gold Awards at the 3rd and 4th “Dunhuang Award” Chinese National Chamber Music New Works Exhibition and Evaluation, and the first prize (top honor) at the Shaanxi Provincial National Instrumental New Works Collection and Selection Activity. He has collaborated with CCTV on numerous occasions to appear in programs such as Elegance of Chinese Music, Picturesque Countryside, and Dragon Boat Festival Glory. His original Pictures of Qilian Mountains concert series has been successfully staged over 20 times in various regions. He has held multiple solo concerts and original works concerts, releasing albums such as Chang’an Bamboo flute Rhyme Dreams of Jiangnan— Lu Yaobo Bamboo flute Solo Concert and Pictures of Qilian Mountains—Lu Yaobo Original Works Concert LIVE. In 2020, the Pictures of Qilian Mountains—Lu Yaobo Bamboo flute and Xiao Works Collection was published by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Press.
Kung Wai Kin
Hong Kong dizi and dongxiao performer Kung Wai Kin, currently a doctoral student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, graduated with a Master of Arts from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under Professor Zhan Yongming, a renowned dizi performer and educator. Kung is the Honorary Director (Hong Kong-Macao Area) of Zhao Songting Flute Art Research Association of Zhejiang Nationalities Orchestra Society. Kung is also a composer. His original composition includes Victoria Harbour Ambiance for Chinese Bamboo Flute and Chinese Orchestra and Capriccio on Causeway Bay for Chinese Bamboo Flute and Piano premiered at Shangyin Opera House, Shanghai in May 2024.
Kung is the winner of the Gold Award at the 9th (Dunhuang) China Ethnic Musical Instruments and Dance Art Week - Bamboo Flute Professional Group, the Gold Award at the "Yungang Cup" International Ethnic Instrument Performance - Professional Youth A Group (Chinese Bamboo Flute), the Gold Award at the China Wuxi 4th International Flute Festival cum "Listen to the Rain Cup" dizi professional competition - Dizi Professional Group, and the Gold Award at the 2018 West Lake International Youth Musical Instrumental Competition - Higher School Professional Group .
Kung is a frequent guest at large scale music and art festivals including Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, Contemporary Music Week, Shanghai International Art Festival and Shanghai New Year Concert, performing with famous music ensembles and art groups. Kung has performed with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Chinese Orchestra and the Di Sheng Fu Dizi Chamber Orchestra, and was recommended by the school to take part in a teaching exchange project with the Geneva Conservatory of Music in Switzerland. He has gone on tour and cultural exchange to over 20 cities and regions in Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Kung has held numerous solo recitals in Hong Kong and Shanghai presented by Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Kung collaborates with artists around the world. Kung performed as guest musician at The Greater Bay Area Film Concert 2023, and his performance was broadcasted on China Central Television, Phoenix Television, Television Broadcast Limited, Radio Television Hong Kong and over 10 other television channels and media platforms. He was invited by the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild to premiere outstanding original compositions at GalaMusica ‧ School Chamber Compositions 2023. Kung was invited to premiere the Luk Wai-chun’s Chinese-Western chamber music pieces, Over Time and Tomorrow with the world-famous cellist Trey Lee in Hong Kong, and the Richard Shao-Peng Wang’s dizi sonata Sea Breeze and Bamboo Dreamin Taipei. Being both curator and performer at Shanghai Conservatory of Music Chinese Traditional Wind Instrument Week, Kung curated and performed a series of lectures and performances.
Kung started learning the instrument at the age of eight in his birthplace Hong Kong. He later furthered his studies in dizi in Shanghai in 2014, graduating with a Master of Arts (Music: Chinese Music Performance – Bamboo Flute) from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2020 under Professor Zhan Yongming, a renowned dizi performer and educator. Kung is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Chinese Music Performance – Bamboo Flute at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
During his time in Shanghai, Kung learned from famous dizi masters from all over the world, including Lu Chunling, Wang Tiechui, Hu Jiexu, Lin Keren, Kong Qingbao, Dai Jinsheng, Jiang Guoji, Lin Wenzeng, Wang Ciheng, Li Datong, Ma Di, Zhang Yanwu, Liu Zhengguo, Lin Guzhen, Zeng Ming, Liu Tienan. He received the Excellent Student Scholarship while studying for his doctorate and master's degrees. In 2019, he was named an outstanding student by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music "Music Talent to Fly" programme.
Guo Hongxi
Guo Hongxi is a young flute player from Taiwan, China. In 2023, she became the first doctoral student from Taiwan of Professor Zhan Yongming (Shanghai Conservatory of Music). From 2017 to 2019, she was a bangdi player of Suzhou National Orchestra. She has performed with many famous orchestras in Taiwan and China. When she was a student, she won the gold medal of Taiwan Music Competition (the highest award of Taiwan Music Competition); from 2018 to 2024, she won the gold medal of Songting Longyin National Invitational Competition, Nanyang International Music Competition, Datong Yungang Cup and other large-scale competitions. Representative original bamboo flute works include "Impression of Shanghai" (2024 Composition Dunhuang Cup Gold Award), "The Descent of the Nine-Tailed Fox: The Origin.", "Elegance of the Orchid", and "Impression of South Island", all of which premiered in Taiwan, China and Singapore in 2024.
She has been studying under the renowned bamboo flute performer Professor Zhan Yongming since 2016. She was admitted to Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2019; in 2020, she was admitted to study pan flute as a second major under Professor Lin Wenzeng; in 2023, she was admitted to the master's program of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and successfully held a bamboo flute solo concert Autumn Dusk in the same year.
During her studies, she successfully held two special concerts, serving as the general director and chief planner. She has collaborated with Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble, and other orchestras on many occasions. She has won awards such as the "Rising Star" title in the 2nd "Guoyun Cup" National Instrumental Music Exhibition, the gold award in the Bamboo Flute Professional Group of the 3rd "Singapore Nanyang International Music Competition", and the gold award (Summa Cum Laude) in the Chinese Music Professional Group of the "Raffles Cultural Arts Festival" in Singapore.
A young erhu player at the Shaanxi Provincial Opera Research Institute; member of the Chinese National Orchestra Society; director of the Erhu Professional Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial National Orchestra Society. Graduated from Xi’an Conservatory of Music, having studied under Zhang Bin, Zhang Huaide, and Zhang Yiwen. Her playing technique is comprehensive, with vivid and expressive interpretation, full of emotional appeal.
She is currently an artistic coach at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she also earned her degree in Collaborative Piano under the tutelage of renowned piano educator Professor Xia Xiaoyan. During her studies, she was awarded multiple postgraduate academic scholarships in recognition of her outstanding performance. In 2018, she received a scholarship to study piano performance at the Mannes School of Music in the United States, where she studied with acclaimed Russian pianist Irina Morozova. She began her undergraduate studies in 2014 at East China Normal University, majoring in piano performance under Professor Zhang Dingyuan, and also received valuable guidance from esteemed piano educator Professor Zhou Mingsun. During this time, she participated in a masterclass with Professor Thomas Kreuzberger, receiving high praise for her performance, and studied with Professor Doris Adam, performing in the concluding concert. Her academic and artistic journey has taken her to international stages, including exchange programs and performances at institutions such as the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, where she participated in both concerts and themed lectures. She has frequently taken part in masterclasses with celebrated collaborative pianist Professor Hartmut Höll, and has served as an artistic coach in numerous vocal and instrumental performances and music festivals. In 2024, she was appointed artistic director on the organizing committee of the 6th Magnolia International Music Festival. Her accomplishments include a second prize in the piano category at the 2024 “Wanye Cup” Paper Competition held during the National Music Education Conference, first prize in the collaborative piano category at the 2022 Shanghai Open Competition, and gold and silver awards in the 2021 9th “Cadenza Cup” National Piano Works Competition, in the collaborative piano and foreign works categories respectively. In 2016, she received first prizes in both the Schumann and Debussy categories at the “Chopin Memorial Award” Hong Kong–International Piano Open Competition.
Neo Rui Zhi
Neo Rui Zhi is a passionate and dedicated Dizi performer. He is currently a member of the Chinese wind and percussion ensemble Reverberance. He graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he studied under Dr. Tan Qing Lun andProfessor Zhan Yongming. A recipient of the NAFA–SOTA Scholarship, Rui Zhi has consistently demonstrated artistic excellence and a strong commitment to his craft.
He has received numerous accolades, including First Prize at the 2020 Singapore Chinese Music Competition, and has beenfeatured in prominent performances with Reverberance and the Singapore Dizi Society.
Rui Zhi began studying the Dizi in primary school and in 2018 became the first Dizi student admitted to the International Baccalaureate Music Programme at the School of the Arts (SOTA), Singapore. He has since performed internationally with the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra and received recognition at the 2021 Raveharp Chamber Competition.
His performance experience also includes appearances with the China Conservatory of Music Chinese Orchestra and the SingaporeChinese Orchestra in the annual SCO x NAFA concert series.
In 2023, he was featured as a soloist in “Thunderous Heaven” concert series by Reverberance, and after graduating from NAFA in2024, he joined the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Summer Programme. That same year, he was awarded a Gold Prize at the 2024Da Tong Dizi Competition in China. Rui Zhi’s musical interests span traditional Chinese music, jazz, and contemporary fusion. As a performer and collaborator, he continues developing his artistry and contributing meaningfully to the wider musical community.
Megat Muhammad Firdaus
Megat Muhammad Firdaus, BA(Hons) (B.85), also known as Megat, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and music director from Singapore. Adept in a diverse range of traditional instruments, Megat is known for his performance on the accordion. Since his music career started off almost two decades ago, he has travelled and acquired knowledge from around the Malay Archipelago and conducted and performed with various groups in Asia.
Dr Ghanavenothan Retnam

Dr. Ghanavenothan Retnam, with his unflinching devotion to Indian classical music, has carved a niche in the arts scene in Singapore. The son of Sri R. Retnam, a pioneer musician in Singapore, he received his tutelage under Pandit M. Ramalingam, who nurtured his passion for playing the flute. As a soloist and accompanist to internationally renowned artists, he has numerous performances to his credit, not only in Singapore but also in various countries. He is certainly one of the most sought-after musicians for music and dance performances.
This prolific and high-caliber flautist has conducted fifteen flute arangetrams, the first of their kind in Singapore. His senior students and non-Indian students have won the coveted 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Open Category at the National Indian Music Competitions. He successfully staged the world premiere of Ghana Sangam at the Singapore Arts Festival in 2006. His stirring and emotive performances led him to record for a Walt Disney feature film.
For his outstanding contributions to the arts, Dr. Ghanavenothan Retnam made history by being the first Singaporean Indian musician to be awarded the prestigious Singapore’s “Cultural Medallion Award” as well as the “Young Artist Award” for music. He has also been conferred with the titles:

~ “Singai Gokula Kannan”
~ “Kuzhalosai Venthan.”
He was also awarded a “Lifetime Achievement and Humanitarian Medallion” by the World Peace and Harmony Organization, New York, USA. In addition to performing, teaching, and serving as the music director at Bhaskar’s Arts Academy, he also composes music for orchestras and dance ballets, which have been critically acclaimed in arts festivals both locally and abroad. His music, based on classical, devotional, and East-West fusion, has been extensively recorded.
An inspirational role model for younger generation artists, he also serves on various programming panels at the National Arts Council, the Ministry of Education’s mentorship schemes, and fellowships at multiple arts organizations globally. For his commendable achievements in the field of music, he has received the reputed title of “Sangitha Kala Bhushana” and was awarded a Doctorate from the International Tamil University, USA.

"The 1st Ensemble-The Call of Dreams" composed by Zhang Mingyi
The 1st Ensemble-The Call of Dreams is composed for the Bamboo Flute Chamber Orchestra and in memory of the predecessors of the Chinese Music Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Adopting Jiangnan music elements, this piece is divided into ten parts, each containing a variation of the central theme subtly woven within. Through key changes and the layering of voices, the ten parts gradually merge, ultimately highlighting the spiritual core of the composition—remembrance and inheritance. It pays tribute to the pioneers of Chinese folk music and carries forward the enduring spirit of traditional Chinese music.

竹笛六重奏《浪影逐流》(世界首演) 何文軒曲(2025)
“Waves Chasing the Flow” is a musical piece themed around the water-dwelling people of Hong Kong. This composition incorporates musical elements of the “Tàn Gē” (Sigh Song), which is recognized as one of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritages. The Tàn Gē is an important traditional folk song passed down among Hong Kong fishermen, typically sung during wedding and funeral ceremonies. Its melody resembles a soft sigh and is primarily performed by women, sometimes presented in a call-and-response format between men and women.
With the decline of the fishing industry in the 1960s, many young fishermen moved to urban areas, putting the tradition of Tàn Gē at risk of fading away.
This piece sighs over memories of the past and the uncertainty of the future. It contains a deep longing for one’s homeland and a search for identity. The audience can feel profound emotions and helplessness by intertwining musical lines and rhythms that flow like ripples on water, exploring this hidden cultural memory alongside the water-dwelling people.

"Elegance of the Orchid"
The ancient bone flute echoes through the canyon, distant at first, then gradually drawing nearer, ushering in the bamboo flute’s main melody.
The orchid is personified to symbolize the human pursuit of ideals and breakthroughs, graceful and unworldly like the Four Gentlemen. Life is fleeting: from budding to withering, it mirrors the fleeting brilliance of an artist on stage. As the theatrical saying goes, “Watching a performance is better than performing,” for every entrance must lead to an exit. When the petals fall, it is both an end and a return to the beginning, reflecting the shifting emotional states across life's stages.
The world sees only the dazzling bloom, unaware that the tender sprout once soaked in the well of tears from struggle and was nourished by the rain of sacrifice.

The composition intertwines music and poetry, employing a narrative style reminiscent of prose poetry and a free-form musical structure to convey my (Zhan Yong Ming) profound longing for my esteemed mentor(Zhao Song Ting). It recalls and honors the times we spent together, evoking the poetic sentiment of “The partridge flies westward, yet the fragrant orchid forever blooms in spring.” Though my mentor has left us, his noble character—as a teacher and a scholar, exemplifying integrity, dedication, and academic rigor—remains like a perennial orchid in my heart. His legacy inspires and drives me in my pursuit and devotion to the art of the dizi.

The word "Entropy" came into the composer's mind upon seeing the constantly changing and reforming flocks of starling birds. The word has many definitions as the state it describes; when things settle, they change.
The solo Chinese, Malay, and Indian instruments show how the flute has migrated and changed across continents and cultures while still remaining true to an essential self; a celebration of diversity, singularity and common purpose.

Nestled between Kowloon to the south and Hong Kong Island to the north, this deep-water harbour has guided Hong Kong's transformation from a small fishing village into a vibrant international metropolis. Victoria Harbour is not only a cherished treasure for locals but also a popular landmark for countless visitors. Standing here, gazing at the world-renowned skyline, each view is truly breathtaking. Towering skyscrapers, lush green mountains, and the azure waters of the harbour, along with the boats that frequently traverse its expanse, together create a stunning panorama. The composer gazes affectionately at this beautiful harbour that nurtured his growth, recalling cherished memories of the past and expressing deep affection and gratitude. At the same time, he conveys his hopes and aspirations for a bright future.

The piece is based on the musical elements of Zhejiang's Wu Opera and depicts the vibrant spring scenery along both banks of the Wu River. It expresses the beauty and happiness of people's lives. In terms of performance techniques, it combines circular breathing with continuous tremolo to more vividly portray the glittering, golden waves of the surging river and the joyful scenes of bustling crowds.
