Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra

Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra (SFACO) was founded in 1983. Mr Zheng Kaiwen took over the baton as Conductor in August 2014 and is now leading the orchestra of 60 active members consisting of students and young working adults, together with the tutelage of the instructors: Miss Yao Xing and Mr Ng Wei Xuan (Woodwind), Mr Yao TianYao (Cello/Bass), Mr Lin Ye (Plucked String) and Ms Nancy Ong (Plucked String & Percussion).

 

The Orchestra held its first public performance “琴韵乐扬 86” at Singapore Conference Hall in 1986 and continued with annual concerts thereafter. In 1993, the Orchestra invited Professor Huang Xiao Fei from Beijing Central Conservatory of Music as Guest Conductor for its 10th anniversary "腾飞" concert. Mr Qu Chun Quan conducted the Orchestra first overseas concert in Penang in 1994. He continued to lead the Orchestra’s concert series "琴韵乐扬" in 1995, 1996 and 1998. For the 1995 concert, the orchestra was delighted to present Mr ZengJia Qing's music pieces, and the composer was invited to Singapore to guide the Orchestra.

 

In 2008, under the leadership of Mr Yeo Siew Mong, the Orchestra went to Beijing, China, for an exchange programme with the local Chinese orchestras during which, the members gained much knowledge in the five-day exchange programme, which broadened their musical horizons. The Orchestra is also frequently invited to perform at cultural activities organized by Singapore Foochow Association. The Orchestra took part in the biennial National Chinese Music Competition organized by National Arts Council and received 3rd prize in the open ensemble category.

 

The Orchestra successfully held 3 sell-out concerts《榕琴缘 • 2015》，《榕琴缘 • 2016》,《榕琴缘 • 2017》and 《榕琴缘 • 2018》at the National University of Singapore’s University Cultural Centre Theatre, Singapore Conference Hall and Victoria Concert Hall respectively. Singapore Foochow Association Chinese Orchestra is committed to promote ethnic Chinese music and culture in the local community, and at the same time improve the performing skills and music appreciation level of our members.
